Piano Titan Amazes with Sparking Swarms of Trills
[…] The pianistically thankless hybrid between symphony and double piano piece occasionally demands the piano titan who can take it up with the orchestra with crazed paw swipes and sparking swarms of trills in the Maestoso. Katz and Tewinkel approached the first movement very solemnly, the portati of the espressivo insertions short, the appoggiaturas extremely flourished. The verve of the immaculately sparkling touch I perceived with similar enthusiasm as the handling of the fearsome octave trills. Katz revealed a sonorous, epically broad and outstandingly transparent shaping of this movement. The devout D-major Adagio had glorious solo moments and awed through its depth and sense of contemplation. The Rondo was all the more tremendously fast. Feeling for Harmony
Unna. Only after two encores did the enthusiastic audience let the pianist go following a breathtaking concert on Sunday evening. “You may go ahead and clap!” Amir Katz said after the B-minor Adagio, K. 540, of W. A. Mozart. You could almost cut the silence with a knife after the last sound had faded away. For here appeared a different Mozart: dark, mournful, perplexed, questioning, wan, and full of melancholy that in the Rondo in A minor, K. 511, turned into wistful resignation reflected in the sometimes almost hesitant repetition of the rondo theme.

Between a Hellish Trip and Light Melancholy
Tense concentrate reigns in the concert hall. Almost five and half hours ago the concert had begun, and still the music-hungry audience has not had enough of the drug by the name of Chopin. In the third Master Concert of the Gevelsberg Konzert Gesellschaft (Concert Society) the excellent piano playing of the young pianist Amir Katz (b. 1973) left a deep impression. Oftentimes the program choices say something about the musician of the evening. Whoever begins a concert like Amir Katz with the sensitive and profound B-minor Adagio of Mozart trusts not only the great soulful power of the work one hundred percent, but also simultaneously trusts the audience’s antenna and of course his own pianistic language.
